Here are a few bite size bits of information about me and my history and career in Web Development, E-Business and Internet Marketing.

  • My introduction to web design and development was somewhat of a fluke. I originally set out to be a mechanic! I was big in to cars in my teens and so I enrolled at the mechanics college in Leeds. Due to a paperwork error they didn't have my G.C.S.E results when they assigned me to a course and I ended up on one that I did not enjoy. They said afterwards that had they known my results beforehand they would have got me in to the top mechanics apprenticeship scheme in West Yorkshire, on £8 an hour straight from school! I didn't stick around because for me, being a mechanic was not all of the fun that I had first thought and so I soon transferred to the IT branch of Leeds College of Technology which is where I coded my first web page. You could say it was love at first sight . . . I was hooked from then on and I started to read up and practice in my spare time.
  • Believe it or not the second phase of my education in this field happened by chance too. I had completed a year at Leeds College Of Technology and decided again that I.T. in general was not for me. I enjoyed the web design stuff but everything else such as networking and desktop programming did not appeal to me. Plus there was a lot of 'Theory' based work which is all well and good but I am of the opinion that you learn best from experience and your time is best spent covering theory as and when it crops up. Turning my back on a career in the general I.T. field. I arrived at Park Lane College fast running out of options and intending to sign up for A-Level Business Studies. On the first morning the tutor came in and said they were offering a new course - E-Business. This was essentially Business Studies but applied to the internet specifically. With my now developing hobby, the choice was a no-brainer. I successfully completed the A-Level course gaining a distinction for the web design module.
  • My first paid job came when a man whom I had met on an unrelated Internet forum needed a new website for his villa in Orlando, Florida. The website can still be found here: Villa4UOrlando.com ! I bought an 'executive' leather chair with the proceeds which still sits proudly behind my desk to this day.
  • I have worked on and off at my family's successful transport company and seen first hand how all of that works. Plus most of my older relatives are in business of some form, some of them on a very large scale so I have grown up in that environment and I always have somebody knowledgeable to call on for help if I need it. With all of this experience I am able to offer not just a website but a functioning E-Business model that will grow and make you money with minimal effort. I am of the opinion that if you pay someone to build you a website and it doesn't make you money then they have not done their job properly!
  • As opposed to going down the conventional (and costly!) route of a full University education. I honed my skills by going on Internet Marketing forums and similar and picking up jobs working cheap on the understanding that I was just starting out and it may take a bit longer to finish jobs. I was impressed by the good and helpful nature of people on these forums and so I joined in and soon had work coming in for me to get my feet wet with. This arrangement worked out very well because I was thrown in at the deep end and all of my time was spent meeting 'real client' demands learning skills that are in demand in the marketplace - stuff they don't teach you at university. Also, working on Internet Marketing forums specifically for people making a living from their own websites I got the advantage of picking up a lot of useful information and seeing how these people operate and make a living full time from the Internet. I am now full of useful snippets of knowledge that I picked up in this time that you can simply only get from experience. Plus I got paid for the privilege!
  • It has taken me the best part of 10 years to master the 'dark art' of SEO. There is so much to think about and the landscape changes at a drastic rate. the thing with SEO is that people are generally not very 'forthcoming' with information about it (as opposed to pretty much everything else that is discussed online, which is pretty much everything!) and they certainly do not teach it as part of any degree that I know of. You literally have to spend the time and money to carry out testing and find out for yourself. Having made this investment I can ensure that every site I build has got the best chance of seeing results in the search engines and therefore making a profit.
  • I have never lost a client through poor service. I have worked in a few jobs in retail for big companies such as Virgin Megastore, ASDA, McDonalds and such and One thing they all drill in to you from day one is customer service. That is the bottom line for all of these big companies and I try to emulate that with my own business. I take great pleasure in a client coming back to me and saying 'You've done a great job!'. I want ALL of my clients to make money from this. After all, if they grow, I generally will grow with them. I take great pleasure in really getting involved and taking my client's business and Ideas and porting them in to a viable e-business (so we can both reap the rewards!).

Get your website seen by the people that matter with one of my competitive SEO packages:

SEO is very much a 'dark art' and people that truly understand it are few and far between. There are no courses or degrees that you can do to learn the trade. Your skills come with experience and experience alone. I have spent a long time studying and testing methods and watching the results. Another thing that people don't realize is that SEO as a professional service requires a great deal of time and in most cases - expense. The days of pressing a few buttons and getting to the top of Google are (unfortunately) long gone . . .

SEO nowadays requires not only cutting edge knowledge but a great deal of labour. There is a growing SEO industry in India. A lot of big agencies outsource a lot of their work to companies in developing countries like this where there is a ready and cheap work force. That said, these big agencies have the buying power and experience to make sure they get what they want. The trouble is that anyone can get a computer and set up as an from SEO anywhere in the world regardless of how capable they may or may not be. On top of this, SEO has a 'dark' underbelly. There are tactics that come and go often that offer a quick path to results (but are in 99% of cases AGAINST the guidelines of the search engines). These tactics collectively are known as 'black hat' SEO. Now, I'm not saying they don't work. Quite the opposite. They work A LOT BETTER AND A LOT FASTER than above board 'white hat' methods.

The drawback is that as quick as the black hats come up with new tricks. Search engines such as Google swing in to action and stop them. This often results in sites losing some or all of their traffic or in some cases being permanently removed from the search engine indexes. Obviously this is not good if your business is depending on leads from your website. These tactics are used effectively to make money every day by black hat SEO's but the difference is that these people will use black hat SEO to set up websites selling things like illegal pharmaceuticals, counterfeit goods and so on. Losing the full website and all of the business comes with the territory, in fact in most cases its part of the business plan! They get in quick, make money, get out and move on to the next site! There is nothing 'Illegal' about these tactics (though the products are generally pretty shady) its just not something you would want to be associated with your business for a number of obvious reasons. So you need to make sure that your are not unwittingly employing a 'black hat' SEO. You may see good results at first but that is guaranteed not to last and it may even damage your business permanently.

So there is the outsourcing option but I have seen time and time again the results of 'black hat' SEO and the damage it can do. With my service you are getting the 'best of both worlds'. I manage all of the projects and carry out research and make improvements to your website and social media presence and such. Then for the time consuming 'labour type' work, I outsource to places like India and the Philippines. The main contacts I work with I have either worked for a long time or physically met in person, or both. The cost of labour there combined with my knowledge and input means that I can offer better 'bang for your buck' than a fully UK based operation every single time without compromising on quality. On top of this you are dealing with me and I can check everything that is done to ensure that nothing black hat is going on.

I am available for one time or on-going consulting.

I have over 10 years professional experience in the industry starting out as a hobbyist in my mid teens then on to Open University courses, freelancing on the side and then finally working full time for myself as a web developer and webmaster. My life in that time has consisted mostly of the Internet and sleep! There is not much I havent seen before. Bounce a few ideas off me . . .

Are you thinking about starting a new e-business (online business) or expanding your existing 'bricks and mortar' business in to the online market? Maybe you are full of ideas for new websites and just want a bit of guidance from somebody who has been there? Then it might be a good idea to speak to a professional before you start making decisions.
